How to Put your iOS Device in DFU Mode

  • Oct 21, 2015

This is a very popular term used in jailbreaking community and we use the abbreviation DFU for the term ‘Device Firmware Upgrade’, what do we mean by this? A lot of sites will be explaining how to function this rather than what it actually does to your device but we will search a bit deeper and explain how to perform DFU Mode by understanding the DFU Mode and what it is for in this article.

DFU Mode term is generated from name DFU 0x1222 protocol by Apple and you can recover your device by using DFU Mode where necessary by not loading iOS operating system or Boot Loader by using iTunes, this is the main difference between Recovery and DFU Mode.

Step by step How to Put your iOS device into DFU Mode explained as follows:

  • Please plug your device into the computer using a USB cable.
  • Turn off the device.
  • Hold the Power button for 3 seconds continuously.
  • Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds as in step 3.
  • You need to release the Power button but keep holding the Home button.
  • After 15 seconds you will be alerted by iTunes saying that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode.

You are in DFU Mode when all steps completed and if you ever get stuck in DFU Mode and looking to get out, holding the Power Button and Home Button simultaneously until Apple Logo appears will help you.

The explained steps work for all iPhones, iPods and iPads in conjunction with any iOS system being used on the device.

If your Home button or Power button is broken and still required to enter the DFU Mode please check the following article to see how it can be done.
