How to Put your Device in DFU Mode when your Home or Power Button Broken

If you have been experiencing problems about your home or power button, if they don’t work then you will have difficulty putting your device in DFU Mode. In order to resolve this issue iPhone Dev Team has released a new version of Redsn0w which enables you to put your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch into DFU Mode without the need of home or power buttons.

We will examine how to put your iOS device into the DFU Mode without using the home or power button by using Redsn0w on Mac or Windows. The guidance explained step by step so you will be easily following all the steps and complete the process.


Please download the latest version of Redsn0w from this link as a start and save it on a folder called “Redsn0w” to use in following steps.


You will also need to download the recent iOS firmware file (.ipsw) for your device from the following links, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch.


By clicking double on the Redsn0w zip file, you will extract the file into your Redsn0w folder and next launch the application. If you are using windows operating system you will need to run the Redsn0w as administrator by right clicking on the Redsn0w and selecting Run as an administrator option.


When redsn0w is launched click on extras option.


You will see an “Even more” button, click on that.


At this stage you will realize there is a button called “DFU IPSW”, click on this option.


This section will request you to select an IPSW, you will need to use the file browser to select the file that had been downloaded in step2.


A file of DFU Mode IPSW will start to be created by Redsn0w.


After the IPSW file has been created by Redsn0w, you will promptly receive a notification and then press OK, please be aware that the prefix of the file created will be ENTER_DFU_.

STEP 10.

You need make sure your iTunes is the most recent version and launch the iTunes on your device in this step.

STEP 11.

By selecting Summary tab and holding down the option key you need to click on Restore, if you are using windows you will need to hold down the Alt key and click on the Restore option.

STEP 12.

Select the file with prefix ENTER_DFU_ as your DFU Mode IPSW file.

STEP 13.

You are done, after the device has been restored your device is put on DFU Mode, you will see the screen tuned to complete black, from this stage and onwards you can use our step by step guides to jailbreak your device or restore it with the required iOS firmware file.
