Downgrade from iOS 9 to iOS 8.4.1 on your iPhone or iPad with few Easy Steps

  • Oct 03, 2015

iOS 9 was announced in June 2015, and has been released for public download. Most iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners have been able to download the public version of iOS 9 and some have been experiencing some glitches since then. It is important to note that certain apps are still not compatible with iOS 9, thus you may feel your device is running slower than usual and may be tempted to revert back to the older 8.4.1 version.

Aside the incompatibility of certain apps, there may be some other reasons why you may want to revert from iOS 9, but you need to have your data backed up before you begin the downgrading process.  Apple will normally sign off the previous version of an OS a couple of months before it launches a new iOS , and when you backup on iTunes, you may not be able to restore the same data on the older version of iOS , therefore you must be prepared to lose some data.

Just before you downgrade from iOS 9 to 8.4.1, you need to first of all download and install the iOS 8.4.1 IPSW which is compatible with your device. Equipping your device with this IPSW as well as a USB cable and iTunes, will prepare your device for the downgrade.

Downgrading from IOS 9 to 8.4.1 – steps to follow

Step 1: You need to launch the “Settings” option first of all, on your device, and then open the “iCloud”

Step 2: scroll down the page and then click on the “Find My Phone”.

Step 3: Toggle at the “Find My Phone”, and put it off.

Step 4: Long-press on the on the power button to switch off your iDevice.

Step 5: From your computer, launch the iTunes options.

Step 6: With the aid of the USB cable, simply connect your iDevice to the computer.

Step 7: Press down the power button and home button down together at the same time.

Step 8: Release the power button while you are still holding the home button down.

You will find a message popping up in iTunes that reads “a device in recovery mode has been detected”.  At this stage the downgrade process is ready.

Step 9: Click on the iDevice that has popped up from the iDevice.

Step 10: Simply click on the Summary button shown on the iDevice page

Step 11: Clock on the “Restore’ button

Step 12: Browse through the already installed iOS 8.4.1 IPSW file and choose the same.

Once the downgrading procedure has been completed a new setup screen will be flashed on your device screen (make sure you don’t tamper with the downgrading process while it is on). At this stage you have successfully downgraded from iOS 9 to 8.4.1.

In most cases, you may have to switch or simply restart your device and then try and restore you backup data and the whole procedure is perfectly completed. As mentioned before, some apps may work slowly when the downgrade has been completed.
